Breaking Free of the Wiring Closet - Oberon, Inc. Enclosures Provide Physical Security for New Cisco Catalyst 3560-C and Catalyst 2960-C C-Series Switches, Bringing Bandwidth Closer to the User
August 31, 2011 - When Oberon, Inc. introduced the Model 1070 Mounted Zone Telecommunications Enclosure in October of 2009, the idea intrigued the networking community. By locating Ethernet switches, patch panels, wireless controllers, and other networking and A/V components directly in the space where they are needed, the enclosures can be used to shorten home-runs, improve data rate and network capacity, and reduce crowding in the telecommunications room.

Cisco recently introduced two compact versions of the Cisco Catalyst 3560-X Series and 2960-S series to make local placement of network equipment simpler and more convenient. Cisco has stated that the new Cisco Catalyst 3560-C and Catalyst 2960-C Compact Series Switches offer "the same functionality, OS, and management capabilities as their wiring-closet brethren." Designed to deliver network connectivity outside the wiring closet, the C-Series switches are themselves powered by Power over Ethernet (PoE), allowing the switches to be used up to 100 meters from the wiring closet and in spaces where there is no access to power outlets.

Of course, moving the switches out of the wiring closet imposes a new set of considerations for protecting the equipment. Oberon's new model 1082-00 wall mounted network cabinet, and new model 1072-00 suspended ceiling telecommunications enclosure are ideal for securing these new switches in the workspace. The 1082-00 is a 22" x 22" x 4" deep network cabinet which can be quickly surface mounted on the wall. The 1082-00 is deep enough for 2U of 19" rack mountable components, (mounted vertically in the cabinet), including Cisco C series switches, patch panels, and other standalone network components. The 1082-00 has a plastic door so wireless routers and access points can also be secured inside.

The new model 1072-00 is a low profile ceiling tile-like enclosure which mounts into the 2' x 2' ceiling tile gridwork. The 1072-00 is only 4" deep, yet is deep enough for 2U of 19" rack mountable equipment. Designed to TIA standards for telecommunications enclosures, the 1072-00 has numerous mounting features for active (line powered) networking equipment, PoE powered equipment such as the C series switches, Wi-Fi access points, and Distributed Antenna System (DAS) components. There are mounting features on the door for Wi-Fi and Cellular broadband antennas.

The 1082-00 and 1072-00 are constructed with locking doors and means to protect attached cabling from tempering, so they are perfect for protecting equipment in remote offices, retail spaces, professional offices, healthcare, classrooms, and other venues where wiring closet space is at a premium.

Oberon, Inc. Announces New Wall Mounted Model 1082-00 Network Cabinet for Organizing Home or Office Networking Components
March, 2011 - Oberon, Inc., a leading manufacturer of wireless access point and telecom enclosures, has announced the new Model 1082-00 network cabinet for homes and offices aimed at reducing clutter and providing secure, convenient, aesthetic placement of networking equipment and computer peripherals.

Oberon's new Home and Office Network Cabinet is a wall-mounted home/office cabinet for organizing networking components. The Network Cabinet provides a convenient way to interconnect and stow broadband modems, wireless routers, small network switches, power strips, network storage, external hard drives, and other components.

"Aesthetics were a major consideration for this project," explained Oberon President and Chief Engineer Scott D. Thompson. "The typical office has a variety of components sitting around taking up space. This vital equipment is vulnerable to dust, spills, being knocked over, and someone simply walking away with them. The Home and Office Networking Cabinet protects those components behind a locking door while at the same time making them basically disappear from view."

The "invisibility factor" also comes into play in the cabinet's door material, an impact-resistant ABS plastic designed to be virtually transparent to wireless signals. The white enclosures accept wall paint for a completely personalized look. For orders over 50 units, Oberon will produce custom enclosures in any decor-matching color for a small additional fee.

The Oberon Home and Office Network Cabinet measures 22" x 22" x 4" deep with a steel back-box. Adjustable shelves, hook-and-loop strips, and tie-downs for wiring give the user the flexibility to mount equipment in a wide variety of configurations to suit individual needs. The user's power strip can be placed directly inside the enclosure, further reducing the visual clutter of the office. Ethernet switches and other equipment can be mounted directly in the space where they are needed, Bringing Bandwidth Closer to the UserTM.

The Network Cabinet mounts to the wall in minutes. The low 4" profile of the enclosure makes it appropriate for mounting just about anywhere in the home or office. Wireless equipment for multiple cubicles can be mounted across the room in open space, external hard drives can be placed in easy reach just over desk height, or the cabinet can be mounted completely out of sightlines near floor level.

Hospital Wireless Installations Must Consider Disease Control -- Oberon, Inc. Enclosures Simplify ICRA Procedures
February, 2011 - In hospital environments, it is recognized that dust accumulated in the air-handling space is a vector of infectious diseases and contamination. The Joint Commission on Hospital Accreditation (JCAHO) has established rules for mitigating the spread of disease, limiting access to the air-handling "plenum" space. Procedures may restrict the number of ceiling tiles that can be removed, how long they are removed, and procedures for cleaning the air and personnel in the work area. Infection control risk assessment (ICRA) procedures have a serious impact on cabling installation, moves, adds, and changes.

Oberon enclosures provide access to wireless LAN access points and telecom equipment without entering the air handling space, simplifying compliance with ICRA guidelines. In addition to providing added safety, convenience, and the security of a locked door, Oberon enclosures also help installations meet the National Electric Code (N.E.C.) article 300.22 requirements for installing unlisted equipment above a suspended ceiling.

Oberon invites attendees of HIMSS11 Annual Conference & Exhibition on February 21-24, 2011 in Orlando, FL to visit Booth 514 to discuss factors to consider in planning healthcare wireless network deployments.

Oberon, Inc. Announces New Wall Bracket Mount Model 1029-00 for Wireless Access Points in Places Where Wireless APs are Recommended in the Horizontal Configuration
February, 2011 - Wireless access point manufacturers often recommend that the access point be mounted in a horizontal orientation to achieve best wireless coverage. While this orientation is easily achieved by mounting the access point on the ceiling, in some hard lid and other environments, ceiling mounts are not possible. In cases where wall mounting is necessary, it can be difficult to achieve the proper horizontal alignment in a secure configuration.

Oberon's Model 1029-00 wireless LAN access point wall mount bracket is designed to mount and secure access points from most manufacturers in areas were wall mounting is required. This aesthetic, white powder-coated steel mounting bracket secures the access point in the preferred horizontal orientation. Conduit, raceways, and cable can be securely terminated inside the bracket to provide for a clean appearance. The access point can be locked in place using the manufacturer's lock feature.

Wireless Networking in Health Care Environments
November 2010 - As hospitals and health care facilities seek to upgrade technology in order to improve efficiency and provide new services, implementation of wireless networking systems become increasingly complex. The challenge of working within environments requiring tightly controlled access add additional considerations to planning for multi-level construction, a variety of construction materials used at different times in the building's history, and the integration of hundreds of wireless LAN access points and wireless devices.

A key component in health care installations is adherence to infection control measures. In medical environments, specific precautions have been established in the Infection Control Risk Assessment (ICRA) procedures of the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). HVAC systems must be isolated, and personnel working in the area are to take special precautions, including use of anterooms where they can be vacuumed using a HEPA filtered vacuum before exiting the work site.

By using enclosures to mount wireless access points in a suspended ceiling, time and labor involved in meeting specialized infection control considerations can be reduced. For all wireless deployments, article 300.22 of the National Electric Code (N.E.C.) requires unlisted equipment installed in the air handling space above a suspended ceiling to be secured in a metal enclosure, accessible via an opening panel or door. This same enclosure arrangement provides a means by which technicians can reach wireless LAN access points from the front, eliminating the need to expose the air handling (plenum) space during moves, adds, and changes (MACs) in the wireless deployment.

A case study of the installation at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital provides key strategies for a successful large-scale wireless deployment. The article by Oberon President Scott D. Thompson and Siemens Communications Enterprise IT Architect Jon Linton, featured in the November/December 2010 issue of BICSI News Magazine, is available here.

Oberon, Inc. Provides Cost-Effective Upgrade for Securing Cisco 1140/1260/3500 series Access Points in Existing Installs
June 2010 - Oberon, Inc., a leading designer and producer of in-building wireless voice and data network infrastructure products, recently announced a new line of products designed to help control the cost of wireless network upgrades to Cisco's new 3500 series access points. The new series of adapter doors for selected Oberon wireless access point enclosures allow for the removal and replacement of doors in previously installed enclosures. The new doors then permit the installation of the Cisco 1140/1260/3500 series access points without the need to replace, remove, or reinstall existing enclosure back boxes. The new access point is locked within the door, providing the same level of network physical security and aesthetics as with the original design.

Oberon's wireless AP enclosures are designed to accommodate access points from most vendors. They are designed to enhance physical network security and simplify access control and maintenance for IT managers. Using an enclosure, network technicians can access the wireless equipment by opening the locked cabinet door rather than removing ceiling tiles and breaching the air handling space. This simplified access is particularly useful in medical environments or other areas where additional precautions are necessary when working above the ceiling plane, as well as in high-traffic areas where minimized maintenance interruptions is paramount. Additionally, the ceiling mounted location of the antenna is the ideal location for omni-directional antenna pattern coverage.

The use of existing infrastructure has additional benefits for the federal and medical markets, where additional regulations may apply when working above the ceiling plane. By providing methods of access that do not breach air handling space, compliance with federal and medical market requirements, such as those set by The Joint Commission for Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), can be simplified.

The new adapter doors provide upgrade options for the following models:

38-1052-ADPDOOR-1140 allows replacement of the Cisco 1240 with the Cisco 1140/1260/3500e/3500i access point. The access point is locked into the door, requiring key access to the enclosure to access the device. The model 1052-00 enclosure remains in place, allowing for cable management and termination to remain in place. Antennas can be attached directly to the face of the 1260/3500e access point. Available for Oberon models 1052-00, 1027-00, and WC-AP1240-X.
38-1052-ADPDOOR-3500e allows replacement of the Cisco 1240 with the Cisco 1260/3500e connectorized access point. The access point is mounted in the enclosure. The adaptor door is a little bit deeper to allow connection of door mounted antennas, such as Oberon's 34-ZDUAL dipole antenna, to the access point. The model 1052-00 enclosure remains in place, allowing for cable management and termination to remain in place. Available for Oberon models 1052-00, 1027-00, and WC-AP1240-X.

Enclosures Provide an Additional Layer of Networking Security for Educational Facilities
June, 2010 - As Universities, high schools, and related conference and medical facilities seek to better secure networking systems, enclosures can provide an additional layer of protection from unauthorized access to equipment. Available for both wireless access points and telecommunications and A/V components, enclosures provide keyed access to networking equipment, preventing vandalism while providing convenient access to authorized technical personnel.

The Oberon Model 1070-00 ceiling-mounted telecommunications enclosure accommodates flexible combinations of rack mountable Ethernet switches, patch panels, wireless controllers and other networking and A/V components. Ideal for structured cabling and Fiber-to-the-Enclosure (FTTE) deployments, these enclosures offer flexibility in housing a variety of networking and A/V components. By locating equipment directly in the space where it is needed, the enclosures can be used to shorten home-runs, improve data rate and network capacity, and reduce crowding in the telecommunications room.

In addition to providing additional security and convenience, enclosures provide a sleek, high-tech aesthetic befitting institutions of higher learning, where maintaining a commitment to providing the best possible technology for students and faculty is key. Oberon wireless and telecommunications enclosures are available with color options, including customization options for special projects, and are designed to enhance any office or educational environment.
